If you enjoy being out on the open water, the Region of Bern is the place for you: there are countless water worlds to discover – from the river Aare to high waterfalls and magical gorges. Not to mention the many lakes, for example Lake Thun and Brienz in the Interlaken holiday region. One of the best ways to explore them is by boat, with views of castles, fishing villages and mountain panorama.
Paragliding, kayaking, river rafting, canyoning and bungee jumping: The landscape in the Bernese Oberland is a true Eldorado for adventure sports. Whether soft adventures or pure action – here you will certainly find your perfect adrenaline kick.
Icy air sweeps over your face, snow crunches underfoot, and the panorama almost takes your breath away: on one side the view of the Swiss Mittelland towards the Vosges, on the other the Aletsch Glacier, lined with four thousand metre peaks. On the Jungfraujoch, 3,454 metres above sea level, you are in a different world.
The Schilthorn – Piz Gloria is world-famous for its 360° revolving restaurant and as the setting for the classic Bond film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”. Once on the summit, you can dive into the world of James Bond, enjoy a brunch or simply marvel at the view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
Numerous mountain streams of the Engstligenalp join together to form the Engstligen Falls. These drop around 600 metres in height in two stages and offer a wonderful natural spectacle. A mule track along the cliff face gives visitors a close view of the waterfalls, which are among the largest ones in the Alps. The ascent can also be done on a via ferrata. Once at the top, you will be enchanted by the largest high-altitude plateau in Switzerland.
In the Fondueland Gstaad, it doesn’t get better than enjoying a fine fondue in the middle of the mountains, where fresh air and succulent herbs provide the basis for the excellent cheese. Lake Lauenen is a popular day trip destination in the middle of a nature reserve. Enjoy the view of the lake and the unspoilt nature on a relaxing walk. In summer, the idyllic mountain lake is also a great place to swim.
The northern shore of Lake Biel is intensively cultivated with vines. A leisurely hike among the vineyards from Biel/Bienne to La Neuveville will give you some insight into the work of the local vintners. The romantic panorama with views of the lake and St. Peter’s Island just adds to the ambience.
